3 Top Wine Tasting Tips

Wine Tasting Tips

One of the top questions that we get asked around this time of year is from our clients who want to know how to taste wine. It’s no wonder that it’s a popular topic, especially since May is the annual Paso Robles Wine Festival and since we offer Wine Festival Shuttle Service, we meet a lot of people interested in learning more about wine.

There’s really no right or wrong way to go about tasting wine, but there’s certainly a few tried and true tips that can enhance your wine tasting experience and we’d like to share them with you:

  •  Don’t confuse your palate: Tasting wine—or anything else for that matter—requires a unique connection between your sense of smell and taste. Since wine is particularly nuanced, the best way to enhance your palate is by not confusing it with other sensory input. In other words, don’t wear perfume, cologne, scented lotions, or flavored lip balms when heading out to taste wine and make sure not to eat right before—or, even chew gum—since flavors can linger on your tongue.

  • Use your senses: When it comes to wine tasting, everyone has their own style. If you haven’t done much wine tasting, it’s easy to get intimidated, but listen to us—relax. By using and trusting your senses, you’ll not only have a great experience, but develop your own style. Focus on smell, color, texture, and finally taste.
  •  Spit: Trust us, no one likes to enjoy a glass of wine more than we do, but when it comes to tasting wine, it’s better to sip, then spit. Not only does this method help keep your palate fresh and engaged, but it also helps you pace yourself—which is really important if you plan on tasting a lot of wines over a long period of time.
Luckily for us, we get to enjoy the Paso Robles Wine Festival every year—and the people who travel here to enjoy it. If you’ve already got your tickets, but you still need transportation, The Wine Wrangler Shuttle Service is ready to give you a ride.
