On the Road With The Wine Wrangler: Castoro Cellars

Wine Tasting at Castoro Cellars With The Wine Wrangler

It would be hard to find anyone on California’s Central Coast who didn’t know the name Castoro Cellars. In fact, it would be more likely that if you asked someone to recommend a winery to visit in Paso Robles Wine Country that Castoro Cellars would be at the top of the list and whether a local or a visitor, it’s often one of the most requested wineries on our WineWrangler Wine Tasting Tours.
Castoro Cellars has been in operation since 1983 and is owned by Niels and Bimmer Udsen. Niels, born and raised in Ventura County, is a graduate of California Polytechnic University where he studied Agribusiness. After finishing his degree, his interests turned to wine and during Harvest in 1981, he landed a job in a cellar doing ‘anything and everything’ that needed to be done. Soon after, Castoro Cellars was born.

Castoro Cellars has over 750 acres of Estate vineyards and of that, over 350 are certified organic. Additionally, all of the vineyards are SIP certified (sustainability in practice). The wines are a collaborative venture, with Niels Udsen at the helm, working in partnership with Tom Myers and Sherrie Holzer. They produce a number of well-known Estate grown wines, including the ever popular Zinfusion and Damn Fine Red Wine.

In addition to wine tasting, visitors to Castoro Cellars can also enjoy yoga classes, concerts, and the recently opened Whale Rock Disc Golf Course.
