On the Road with The Wine Wrangler: Hear the howl of the Grey Wolf

Wine Wrangler: Grey Wolf

Grey Wolf Tasting

Conveniently accessible on the drive up from Paso Robles to the Coast of California. Grey Wolf winery gives a warm welcome into their simple, comfortable estate. With the warmest welcome from two adorable dogs and three cats, you will find it difficult to leave.

Grey Wolf is the brainchild of Joe and his wife Sally Barton. Back in 1994, they decided to open their winery at this site to make quality craft wines. Joe senior sadly left the Wolf pack 4 years later, albeit leaving them with a burning mantra that lives on as the family's defining ethic. "A family is a circle caring and strong”.

Their son Joseph now heads the winery, looking over all things from vine to bottle to table. As head winemaker, trained in experience with excellent winemakers that Paso Robles is known for and at school, learning fruit science at Cal Poly. Joseph has, with time, defined his own technique: producing wines true to their terroir, with rich fruit with extensive extraction and impressive tannic structure.

Most of Joseph's wines have a significant ageing potential. He so far has spear headed the production of two ranges of wine. The Grey Wolf Wines and the Barton Family Wines

The Grey Wolf Wines
Mostly of Bordeaux varietals, this complex and layered range not only gives you the consistently amazing works of Bordeaux blends, but you will find Joseph's cheeky play (rather, twist) with each bottle. Complete with a range of white wines and rosé, these are great wines to have out on the gorgeous terrace and marvel at the beauties of life.

Our recommendation is the Grey Wolf Lineage. A blend of some spicy varietals Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. It offers an immersing nose following with excellent body and a lovely long finish with notes of cocoa. Not to reveal too much, this is definitely a wine worth your while.

Barton Family Wines
The wine selection here reads like something off a story book. A story book filled with all you favorite things!  Well, Purple Rain definitely speaks to our soul! The 100% Pinot Noir with an effervescent nose of ocean air and lilac reveals itself brilliantly on the palate with flavors of white pepper and Eucalyptus.

The rest of the selection reads pretty well with gems such as The Dance, Staying Alive and Mr. Jones.

Take some time to tantalize your taste buds at the café with an amazing pulled-pork sandwich

As you taste, The Wine Wrangler would love to hear your thoughts on the wines we recommended and any other you taste during your visit.
